Her father was awed by the Civil Rights movement's historic march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. DuVernay visited Selma during the summer months and was inspired to create a film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. While she was still a student DuVernay was interested in creating for the broadcast media. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to examine the garbage at the home of a member of the jury. Her tasks left her disappointed with journalism so she decided to shift her focus towards the publicity industry. DuVernay was hired right after graduating from college as an assistant publicist in a small studio. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999.
